Basic health information for travelers to Congo Democratic Republic

• A yellow fever vaccination is required if travelling to the country.

• Water in the country should be considered dangerous to drink and boiled well before used. Swimming is not advised owing to the high number of water based diseases present.

• Plague is endemic in North Eastern Province Orientale. There have been recent reports of incidents of plague in Djugu territory and travellers should take all required precautions if travelling through this region.

• Cases of Polio have been confirmed in the country whilst Malaria, African sleeping sickness (Trypanosomiasis) meningitis and cholera are common health threats. Visitors to the country are strongly urged to take vaccination to counter these and other diseases and to take all necessary precautions whilst in the country to avoid infection.

• Ebola and Rabies are both present alongside Hepatitis A, B and E. Travellers should avoid unclean water and animals and immediately seek medical assistance if infected by either animals or insects and symptoms develop.

• Medical care in Congo is fairly basic but the Centre Prive d'Urgence (CPU) clinic in Kinshasa should be able to cope with basic health problems. Medical aid and facilities outside of Kinshasa are scarce and poor however and evacuation to neighbouring countries may be required if condition is serious.

• Travellers visiting this country should make certain that all travel and medical insurance is up to date prior to travelling to the country. It is advisable to take specific personal medicines as well as supplies such as syringes and drip needles, as medical facilities are available only in larger centres.

Basic security information for travelers to Congo Democratic Republic

• Theft and general street crime is a big danger in the country and travellers should keep their valuables in a safe place at all times. Kidnapping of foreigners for ransom has occurred in the country and travellers should avoid travelling alone throughout the country in general and particularly after dark.

• Visitors should be wary of both confidence tricksters pretending to be police and legitimate but corrupt police officers who may imprison travellers and demand payment for release. Visitors should avoid crossing the authorities and keep a copy of their passports with them at all times.

• Tourists who are travelling throughout the country should be wary of the various armed and dangerous militias that exist throughout the region and are still fighting the government forces. The constant threat of violence can cause the borders with Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda to close at short notice and travellers stuck in the country should contact the nearest foreign embassy immediately if unable to escape. All travellers should avoid any signs of conflict whilst visiting the country and closely examine the current military and political situation prior to beginning their flight.

• Roads outside the main town are considered poor and dangerous and should be avoided if possible. Bridges should be checked to make sure that they are safe before crossing.

• Photographs of important military and government installations are considered dangerous and will run the risk of being detained and arrested. Journalists visiting the country are advised not to conduct interviews or film without the necessary local permits.
